Discipline Ideas for Use in the Classroom
Here are a few ideas for classroom management consequences. Once you have decided what you want to use in your classroom, remember to Be Consistent!
Individual Consequences:
- Write a BCR (Brief Constructed Response)
- Translate for the student – when a student uses bad words to complain about something, calmly translate the complaint into more appropriate words. This has the benefit of throwing the student off guard enough diffuse the situation and will teach the student more appropriate methods of expressing him/herself.
- Write an apology letter. Having the parent sign the letter is a way to ensure the parent knows what happened if it becomes necessary.
- Turn a Card – this is a non-verbal method of giving students a warning. Students all start on green, when given a warning their card turns to yellow. When the card turns to red, the parents get a call or note about the child’s behavior.
- Little Kid Recess – older kids may be very motivated to change their behavior after they have to take a time-out sitting on the little-kid playground.
- Thinking Station – a student can be sent to the thinking station to think about what they have done and answer three questions:
- What did I do wrong?
- What could I have done instead?
- What will I do differently next time?
Positive Reinforcement:
- Catch students being good – provide tickets randomly throughout the day for good behavior and raffle off prizes at the end of the week. A larger prize can be raffled off at the end of the month, or students can spend their tickets in a classroom store.
- Mystery Student – watching for a mystery student can encourage students to do their best at whatever task they are doing, whether that is walking nicely in the hallway, putting effort into what they are reading or having the best behavior for the day. Turn the idea around for classroom cleanup can be fun for students as well and encourage them to find the mystery piece of trash. Involve the class by picking one or two students to help you choose the mystery student.
